Vancouver Showing NBA Interest?

Comments34

The dream of an NBA return may not be dead in Vancouver, as commissioner David Stern admitted to ESPN’s Bill Simmons that the league has received interest from Vancouver.

In Simmons’ Monday podcast (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6125242), Stern tells Simmons, “We’ve had visits, believe it or not, from Vancouver..where the Canucks are absolutely doing a spectacular job.”

Stern goes on to admit, again, to Simmons that he has regrets with how the NBA handled the Grizzlies departure from Vancouver.

That sentiment was first expressed by Stern in a 2007 interview with Simmons.

“I wish we hadn’t had the Vancouver experience,” Stern said. “Great city and we disappointed them and we disappointed ourselves.  (But) I don’t think that we can go back. I think that was a great city and we didn’t take advantage of the opportunity. That’s a great disappointment to me.”

  1. Andy says:

    NOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo, stay out

  2. Ryan says:

He said the same thing to Seattle.

Part of me hopes it’s genuine, but a larger part of me thinks he’s trying to whip up interest in non-NBA markets to use as leverage during the CBA talks this summer.

    I guess we’ll see what happens…

  3. dave says:

Keep it in the south. We don’t want it.

  4. L Bowe says:

God Please not this again….Get the message NO ONE IS INTERESTED!!

  5. mac says:

what ridiculous comments from dave and andy. basketball is one of the fastest growing sports in canada, and hugely popular with new canadians. meanwhile, hockey canada is losing enrollment as younger people begin to lose interest in hockey.

i am a fan of both sports, and would love both to succeed in vancouver. no idea why anyone would be upset at the prospect of getting a major league sports franchise.

    • Mike says:

I agree with you mac….Dave and Andy have no idea what they are talking about! bring back the NBA to VanCity!!!!!

  6. Name says:

Basketball is a great sport! The NBA….not so much.

  7. Leaper says:

I don’t think Vancouver and its people are the problem with having an NBA team….its the fact that all the star players don’t want to come to this “Outpost”……so why would anyone bother? Headache…..stick to Hockey Vancouver.

  8. TheDude says:

The NBA can go to hell.

  9. East Van Man says:

No thanks you can keep your ignorent athelets MR. Stern. if they would rather play in Milwakee than Vancouver we don’t need them or want them

  10. kris says:

Who cares about the NBA, Its all about the Canucks, Give Seattle their Basketball team back and anyone in the Northwest who cares will go see the Sonics down in the dub.

  11. sam says:

I think vancouver’s doing such a good thing in wanting to pursue a major league sports franchise. out city deserves the NBA. sure things didn’t go so well the last time around. but with wise management, and local investment. Vancouver could have a great, competitive team. the NBA is an entertaining league. who wouldn’t want to have Chris Paul dishing out assists in Vancouver? who knows? maybe Steve Nash may have some interest in being a part of ownership. My hope? that this is reality and becomes real in the next year or so. the NBA CAN flourish here. fans come out and support! what’s past is past. Vancouver is a world class city. we need some more world class sports. having the NHL, the NBA, the MLS and a rising national league (the CFL) bodes well for our beautiful city. gotta believe that the Aquilini’s are pursuing this for real.

  12. charan says:

no thanks … keep it as it is. we are happy with our Cancuks!

  13. Westside's the Best says:

Vancouver looks more attractive now that the Canucks are actually doing well and the MLS promotion, but players have problems going to Toronto (too far from South Beach and too cold). So how can we expect to get good players out north of the border which in NBA circles is basically the middle of nowhere?

  14. NOT AGAIN says:

For god sakes, not again. Why would I spend a penny of my hard earned money on a league that pulled the stunt they did in the 90′s and 2001. They basically made it impossible to have a good team and then lied to everyone in the city when they left. I would NEVER go to a game! Not even if they paid me and drove me to the doors of Rogers Arena. Screw off NBA and stay out of here! Besides none of you players want to come here.

    • Andy p says:

Thank you for not coming to a game if we get the NBA back, your exactly why it failed the first time, now we will succeed !

  15. Jerald says:

I don’t know if the previous troubles with a general lack of interest in basketball have gotten any better. I don’t think the players really wanted to play in what they perceived as a cold, rainy, culturally foreign outpost, either. I’d be on no rush to try and do this all over again.

  16. Ryan says:

I agree with sam. I loved the Grizzlies when they were here, so of course like a lifelong Nucks fan , i was left dissapointed at the end. Back in the day, they were a poorly run franchise at best. Signing and drafting players who obviously were not interested in being in Vancouver was a big part of that. And that was because Vancouver didnt have the exposure that it does now. Therefore i believe an NBA team can and would work and prosper here. I think that after the olympics, the way MLS is doing, (the Whitecaps getting that new TSN deal) as well as the new interest in the Canucks due to their performance and the Sedins over the last two years. Honestly, it more than likely would work so i am a solid proponent for this idea……buuuuut…..forget it i friggin hate basketball and their players are way more spoiled and overpaid then NHL players and we live in a fairly humble city in comparison to other franchise cities like L.A and New York. So i say screw the NBA. Seattle needs their team back, we can use them like they should use us for our Nucks lol. Either way , this city isnt getting a team for a minimum of 3 + years. But whatever, chances are they’ll be super cheap tickets at 7 -11 again so maybe ill see them. GO NUCKS

  17. Dylan says:

I think if they could put a good team together there would be more then enough fans to support the franchise, things have changed in this city, I play basketball and I see lots of interest in it all across the mainland, I hope they take a good look at bringing back a team here, for those who dont care about an NBA team in vancouver, stop hateing on the idea and just enjoy that the canucks are bringing the stanley cup home this year, and let the rest of us who want this to happen worry about it

  18. mgc says:

people that bug me are called naggers

  19. Kh says:

If they comeback I’m buying season tickets! I was thinkin about moving to Toronto just to live in a (Canadian) city with a basketball team. Not a fan of living down south or going down south if u know what I mean!

  20. sam says:

I think Vancouver’s best chance is with the Aquilini’s right now. They are the ones with the deep pockets. This may be the first LOCAL ownership that are looking to bring an NBA franchise to Vancouver. We need to be proud of that. I think Aquilini’s should be commended for trying to bring back the NBA (also for business reasons too, obviously). I hope they make it happen. It would be awesome to bring back the NBA, and a relocated franchise too, not an expansion team (yuck).

  21. jed says:

with a great management and a lot more interests, i think it should work a second time around. however, let’s not forget that the first, it’was all muddled by politics, sadly initiated by the nba front office involving david stern and his guy stu jackson. howelse can you explain, stu jackson running the team then, when it went sour, had to go back to nba office, then afterwards, david stern coming out, it was a failure, obviously backing up his guy.

i would like to see another second shot at an nba team here, but let’s be realistic to know that unless david stern is running the show, vancouver will not have another team.

  22. PEDRAM SHAKIBAFAR says:

    DEAR TEAMRADI:
H HOOP IF NBA BACK TO VANCOUVER WE HAVE PLAYER WHAT OT PLAY IN VANCOUVER NOTLIK STEVE FRINSS. I WILL LOOKING TO GET NBA BACK SO WE CAN WORK AT THE GAME TO.
    ‘THANK YOU.

  23. Josh says:

l think an NBA team in Vancouver will be great for the city.
NBA players are having a change in mindset lately,
even Kobe entertains the idea of playing in Europe in the event of a lockout.
never fear hockey fans, the ‘Nucks will always be our pet sports team.
Did you have the same apprehension about the WhiteCaps getting into MLS?
    l bet no.
Stern has sounded his regrets for whatever happened with the Grizzlies,
whether he is sincere or no is beyond the point, l guess if we take into account the benefits an NBA team will bring to the city.
l bet this time, Stern and the NBA will be extra cautious in dealing with us.

  24. Hasrath H. says:

Did I just here on the radio that the Hornets are moving to Vancouver, or was that just some speculation ??

  25. Andy p says:

These losers that say they wouldn’t support an NBA franchise are the same lowlifes that complain that Vancouver is a no fun city and have nothing better to do than put a negative spin on anything and everything that’s not Hockey ! Bring the NBA back to Vancouver and this time we’ll get it right,as for the no fun city fools maybe they should be the ones to leave the city !

  26. Steve Purvis says:

Basketball is a great sport very exciting and I truly believe that it can make it in Vancouver with New ownership and Better Marketing.. The Grizzlies franchize was completely screwed up because of poor decisions at head office… With a strong Canadian Dollar and it being the only Team in Western Canada I would do great! Basketball is huge and the haters should try playing it before beating down on the Sport and the idea of having a team close to home… Basketball is a Canadian Sport remember that. It brings tourists from the states wanting to see an NBA game.. people from seattle who miss their team would come up here to watch… Steve Nash would love to play in his home town…. As a true basketball fan it makes sense to me ofcourse but with Recently having the 2010 Winter Olympics here the world saw what a Beautifull place it is to live why wouldnt an allstar athlete want to live here. The population of the Lower Mainland has increased a lot since the grizz were here too … I Bet if it was announced that the team was moving to Van they would sell 10,000 season tickets in the first week…. The Team 1040 should be Hyping this as it would lead to more business for their radio station in years to come… Basketball is a much safer less violent sport for children to watch on TV as well No fights hits from behind etc… Not that I dont like hockey or fighting but it would be a great family evening going to see the Miami Heat come to town or the Lakers…. Vancouver as a city would be that much better

  27. David says:

I am sooooooooooo for the NBA coming back to Vancity . I think it will last here with better managment . We were robbed the last time we had our NBA team, by bad management. Basketball has grown so much since we lost our pro team here. I think this city needs to accept more than just the canucks . YES I KNOW HOCKEY is huge here but we can support another major franchise . I mean look how many times the Canucks has disappointed the fans over the decades . We only gave the Vancouver Grizzlies like 6 years to do something . I think we need to be a well rounded”SPORTS TOWN” and stop being a closed minded ,

BRING BACK THE NBA TO VANCITY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. Hef says:

F the NBA. Players dont want to play here. Product sucks (they need tshirt canons , cheerleaders, etc to keep people interested)Vancouver should get an MLB team!

  30. Gordon R says:

I like how when they talk about Vancouver and the NBA they always show a picture of Big Country…. Need I say anymore. It did work 10 years ago what makes one think it will work this time. The NBA is structured that only a few teams buy all the good players up and teams like Vancouver will always be bottom feeders and farm teams to the Celtics and the Lakers. Vancouver is not a basketball city and unless they can bring a contender here in 5 years and bring fan interest, they will move the team again or fold. I said that 15 years ago with the Grizzles and they only lasted 6 years. This was sadly the beginning of the end of the Griffiths ownership.

  31. Steve Purvis says:

Negativity will get us no were…. LETS JUST GET A TEAM HERE AGAIN … I think maybe all the haters in Vancouver are just Racists that hate it …. Black people are more athletic get used to it… thats what makes it exciting… Vancouver is SOO BORing with one sports team… I mean MLB???? Baseball is the most boring sport to watch on TV …. buncha Fat losers
