March 10, 2010 Rundown
10:30 Jim Hughson - Hockey Night in Canada
Once the Canucks started the comeback thought they would win the game
Team has the confidence and ability to comeback when down
Luongo did look bad early in the game but steadied himself and got the win
Think Jannik Hansen has a good game but always seems to be in Vigneault’s doghouse
Hansen has pretty good hands and world class speed just needs to shoot the puck more
Kyle Wellwood and Jannik Hansen make a pretty good third line
Good idea for league to finally tackle head hits – it will take long suspensions to remove it from the game
10:50 Tim Cherry - son of Don Cherry
Writer and Producer of ‘Keep your Head Up Kid’
In 2004 Don Cherry agreed to do a movie about his life
Don Cherry wanted the movie to be true and show his character flaws
Shot the film in Winnipeg
Some of the scenes were tough to watch because it hits too close to home
Film starts with Don Cherry as a 10 year old
It’s difficult to grow up when your dad is a coach of a hockey team – people say negative things about your dad and it hurts
Tim Cherry was behind the bench when the infamous “too many men” call was made in Montreal
He knew that meant his dad would not be back to coach the Bruins after that and so he would have to go to a new school in a new city
Casting his mom and dad was not difficult because the actors chosen were so good
11:35 Dave Strader - voice of the Phoenix Coyotes
Canucks versus Coyotes tonight
Game could go two ways:
Canucks could be distracted because they know they are going home soon
Or could be extra motivated to end this long road trip with a bang
Coyotes are playing well and Bryzgalov has been playing very well
Hope to get Mathieu Schneider in the line up soon for the first line power play – he is practicing with the team
Ed Jovanovski has had a good season, when he is engaged physically he is a much better player
They are a top team for getting goals from their defence core
Ownership situation is still not 100% settled
There was not a lot of NHL depth before trade deadline, but Don Maloney added five NHLers so they are in a better position for a playoff push
Starting to get more fans out to the games – will bring back the ‘whiteout’
12:20 Dave Tomlinson
Canucks have a confidence to come back in games while trailing
They are tied with Chicago for goals for in the league
Raycroft will play tonight
Last time they played Phoenix it was a very physical game
So might see Hordichuk tonight for toughness and fresh legs
Demitra did not have a good game last night so Samuelsson worked his way up to play with Sedins
Did not think they would be able to comeback last night against Colorado
In the latter part of the game, they were getting pucks to the net and taking more shots
1:00 John Shorthouse
It’s fun to see the confidence in the Canucks right now and their ability to come back when down
To be 4 -1 in this last stretch against very good teams is an impressive road trip record
Expect a tight checking defensive battle against the Coyotes tonight
Kyle Wellwood is picking up his game since the Olympic break
1:35 Paul Barber Vancouver White Caps
Watched a lot of the 2010 Olympics from home in England and it was spectacular
Have good people in management of Whitecaps and commitment from ownership is phenomenal
Major league soccer in Europe is becoming a big deal
The numbers are growing all the time - more kids playing
The White Caps have a great reputation in England because a lot of ex players from Bob’s time have had good things to say
From spending time here have started to follow hockey and have fallen in love with the game
With a high media profile comes a lot of pressure to deliver
Hope people of BC will get behind and support the White Caps – which is the highest level of soccer in North America
Thinks the city should be proud to have three top level sports teams and there is indeed room for all three in this market
