USA Captain Carlos Bocanegra Set To Sign For Whitecaps?

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC have long been rumored to be the destination of United States captain Carlos Bocanegra. The central defender is set to leave Rangers with all the financial troubles and a move to Major League Soccer and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC seems likely. This according to the story in the Scottish Sun.

The reason many of Rangers stars may walk is due to claims that contracts have been switched to the Newco without permission.

It’s understood club chief Charles Green ignored strict rules to ask permission before shifting the contracts of every employee after the process to liquidate Rangers Football Club plc began.

Green then sent letters out yesterday stating employees have until midnight next Wednesday to make a decision. But according to PFA Scotland, Green’s failure to go by the book has now left every player available to leave for free.

Top sports lawyer Dr Gregory Ioannidis told the Scottish Sun that, “It is a fundamental principle of contract law that no alterations to a contract are allowed unless both parties have given a valid consent and have agreed to such alterations.

“The players are NOT obliged to sign a new agreement with the new company if they do not wish to do so. In terms of football law, they become free agents.”

Meaning that Bocanegra is free to sign with whatever club he chooses and Vancouver is very likely the top destination.
